Prompt: Reflect on an event or experience that has been a significant source of inspiration. How has this inspiration shaped your beliefs, actions, and career goals?
This is a very rough publish of what I want the essay to include, but I want to make it impactful and meaningful to show my growth.
Moving to a new country, from Dharamsala, India, to the United States when I was 7 was the first time I could remember. I felt the emotion of anxiety. My anxiety around my language barrier. And it was then getting older and realizing the financial struggles of my single mother. Throughout my high school years, my anxiety took such a toll on me. I struggled with a severe underbite. My jaw was constantly in pain, and everyday eating was a challenge. My anxiety was at an all-time high, and it kept me from excelling in school to my fullest potential. At least, I thought it did at the time. Although I maintained good grades throughout high school, I could never take leadership or participate in class discussions the way I wanted to.
All of this played a significant role in why I decided to go to community college. All my years in high school, I let anxiety hold me back. Not only would I be able to save my mother from the burden of tuition money, but I could also apply for scholarships like the TANC scholarship to help me pay for transferring to a UC. Attending community college would also give me the time to understand what I wanted to do in my career. To save money, I began to work at the Crepevine Bistro. I worked here for a year. I learned a lot about myself with this job. In high school, I would have never been able to converse with so many strangers because I was always scared. With this job, I realized how much I love to talk to people and take charge when there are any issues.
I made such a good impression on many customers that my manager implemented an employee of the month system a while after I was hired and made me the first employee of the month, expressing how proud he was of my effort and character. The following year, I started my YOUTH CODE NOW internship, where I would tutor math and coding subjects to underserved elementary schools in Richmond. Three times a week I led classes of twenty plus students. Most were English as their second language. I felt connected and understood all my students because I had been in a similar position as them when I moved here. I constantly kept a positive enthusiasm for them. I continually interacted with Youth Code Now management to discuss student progress and address issues where we could then decipher how to improve our teaching methods and design more teaching materials to sustain every student’s interest in math. I proved a lot to my younger self with this internship. I’ve always had big dreams of what I wanted to be in the future, my time in community college has been precious to me because thats when I began to understand that the hardships I went through as young girl did not have to control me or hold be back from achieving my dreams. It helped me become the driven young woman now racing towards my goals.
I learned how much I thrive in a leadership role and what I am capable of. Before I knew it, I had become the person I had never thought I could be in school. I sit in front of all my lectures and discuss ideas with all my professors. I am constantly driven to be on top. I attend Contra Costa Community College, majoring in business administration, to achieve my bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley. I aim to become an entrepuiner and continue my education. I plan to carry everything I have learned about myself in community college and take it with me to excel and grow at UC.
