Ethical Dilemma in Nursing Practice
During my clinical practice, I encountered an ethical dilemma involving a patient who refused a recommended treatment due to their cultural beliefs. This situation highlighted a conflict between the ethical principles of autonomy, respecting the patient’s right to make informed decisions, and beneficence, which prioritizes the patient’s well-being (American Nurses Association [ANA], n.d.).
The ethical principle of autonomy was initially violated when the clinical team prioritized the patient’s immediate health needs over their expressed wishes, administering the treatment without adequately considering the patient’s perspective.
