WHAT IS A LITERATURE REVIEW?
“In writing the literature review, your purpose is to convey to your reader what knowledge and ideas have been
established on a topic, and what their strengths and weaknesses are. As a piece of writing, the literature review must be
defined by a guiding concept …. It is not just a descriptive list of the material available, or a set of summaries.”1
The goal of this assignment is for you to gain a deeper understanding in a specific area of engineering management. You
will prepare a Literature Review on an assigned topic. (Topic assignments are in these instructions.) You may narrow
your assigned topic to a specific discipline, industry, or field of interest. Your literature review must address either:
• management of technical or engineering functions, or
• management of broader functions in a high-technology or engineering organization
Your literature review must align with this definition and must incorporate the management aspect. For example, if you
narrow your topic to “forecasting” you cannot focus on the technical aspects of a specific modeling approach, you must
make the linkage to impact on managing the planning function.
For Part A, you will submit the title and list of references for your literature review. The title should reflect your assigned
topic and your focus. Your references must meet the requirements below.
R EQUIREMENTS
Your Literature Review must contain at least three (IEE 431) / five (IEE 541) recent articles from refereed journals.
• “Recent” means that the article was published after 12/31/2014. The publication year must be 2015 or later.
• “Article” means that the item cannot be a book review, an editorial, a column, a call for papers, a literature
review or survey, or other work that is not based on research.
• “Refereed” means that the journal is classified as “Refereed” per Ulrich’s directory.
o This is not the same as the designation “Reviewed” in Ulrich’s directory.
o This is also not the same as the “Peer-reviewed journals” filter in the library’s Search function.
o This is also not the same as Google’s “scholarly article” designation.
• “Journal” means that the Serial Type is “Journal” per Ulrich’s directory.
• You may not use articles assigned for reading.

can refer to the separately posted “Search Guidance” document for more information on Ulrich’s directory.

You cannot re-use work that was submitted for another course or previous section of this course.
You will submit your work via a Canvas assignment, which checks submissions for plagiarism potential. The use of
Generative AI is not permitted for this assignment; your work will also be checked for AI-generated text. Both plagiarism
and use of Generative AI for this assignment violate the ASU Student Academic Integrity Policy. Violations will be
sanctioned according to the academic integrity policy and FSE sanctioning guidelines.

F ORMAT R EQUIREMENTS
Your work must conform to the following format requirements.
File Type Word. Other file types will not be graded.
Font Times New Roman, size 12 pt, must be used for the text portion of the document. Larger sizes may be
used for headings and titles.
Layout Standard margins, line spacing, indentation, and paragraphs; One column; with a page number on
each page.
Figures and
Tables
• Every figure and table should have a label and caption (e.g., “Figure 1: …”, “Table 1: …”)
• Every figure and table should be referenced within the text, including those in the appendix
WRITING G UIDELINES
Your ability to communicate clearly through language is part of the grading criteria. Your work will be evaluated on your
ability to organize your writing, demonstrate original thought, develop ideas, and apply critical thinking. You can find

• Use a technical writing style, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation. No first-person narratives!

• Write in your own words; do not simply “copy & paste” from your references.
o If you quote material with in-text citations, be mindful of the proportion. You must provide context and
interpretation. The #2 area for deducted points is lack of original thought.
The #1 area for deducted points is using a reference that does not meet all requirements.
