Background & Rationale with Research Aim or Project Goal
You will be developing a background and rationale with a research aim for a research protocol
or manuscriipt or a project goal for a project report one would find as part of a company report.
A brief explanation of what is expected for each part is below:
Background – review of existing literature on the topic to include:
• An explanation of and the epidemiology of the disease or problem.
• An overview of the known information on the topic.
• A highlight of the research gap.
Rationale – why the project/study should be done that includes a clear explanation of the
contribution and novelty of your proposed research. This explanation needs to be
supported by the evidence you provide. Explaining how the evidence shows why your
proposed research or project meets the FINER (Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical,
Relevant) criteria is synthesizing the information you provide and is your rationale.
