CASE
Emma, a 19-year-old nursing student, is known for her intelligence, humor, and charismatic personality. Her peers enjoy her company and admire her dedication to becoming a nurse midwife. However, it has been discovered that Emma has been snorting cocaine before attending clinical rotations. This discovery was made by Sarah, a fellow student who stumbled upon Emma’s substance use.
Sarah faces a difficult decision: whether to report Emma’s cocaine use to the faculty or keep it to herself. Reporting Emma might result in severe consequences, including potential expulsion from the nursing program and the destruction of Emma’s dream of becoming a nurse midwife. On the other hand, not reporting Emma could jeopardize patient safety, the integrity of the nursing profession, and Emma’s own health and future.
