Medical records are considered legal documents, and they can be subpoenaed at any time by the legal courts. Healthcare professionals need to be sure documentation, retainment of records, and corrections that need to be made in the medical record meet current guidelines. It is important to understand that if something was not documented legally, that means it did not happen. Medical records should only contain information that relates directly to the care of the patient.
Scenario
You are the team lead for your facility, and you have been asked by your supervisor to provide an in-service for the staff on your team regarding the proper handling of medical records. The best way to present the information would be to create a PPT to present.
Instructions
For this assignment, create a PowerPoint presentation discussing at least 10 or more components of the medical records required for all outpatient facilities. Include information regarding retainment and disposal of medical records (related to the state in which you currently reside) and how to legally release medical records. Also, include the steps to making corrections in electronic patient records.
In your presentation, include at least one example of an ethical dilemma that your team may face when managing patient information and provide direction on how to handle that situation.
You must use PowerPoint to complete the assignment.
A minimum of 10 slides (not including title and reference slide) must be included.
Title slide, reference slides, and speaker notes are required to be included in the slides.
Be creative and include graphics.
