There are six types of poverty (situational, generational, absolute, relative, urban, and rural). Each impacts the human brain and learning. Please review the attached articles, but first, watch this video by brain-based learning expert, Eric Jensen.
While viewing, first and foremost, be mindful of “othering.” This occurs when, with good intentions, observers lump those less advantaged than themselves into a singular group and, further, assume that as non-members, are able to understand and offer “fixes” for deemed shortcomings. This perspective of pity or deficit model is a filter and can be as damaging as ignoring the issue altogether. Secondly, pause after each video and makes some notes about how that technique is used or could enhance your classroom and/or school.
Prompt: Jensen argues that the better students’ academic operating systems are, the better they’ll be able to handle the challenges that school and life throw at them. Compare and contrast the three articles with the Jensen material included in this video. Also, consider the Marzano text.
