Purpose For this assignment I am looking for you to explore a different culture you do not affiliate yourself with. A way for us to understand intercultural communication or how to communicate with people that don’t share our backgrounds is by immersing oneself into a different culture to see how others interact and define the world around them. Ask a friend of yours if they have a culture that you don’t associate with and if they do ask them if they could take you to a location where other people within that culture gather. For instance, my friend associates herself with the record collecting culture, so she took me to Amoeba Records in Hollywood, CA and I learned about this culture from people looking to purchase records rather than just listening to music on Spotify. Skills: In this assignment you will: Use communication theory to explain communication phenomena. Analyze the relationship between communication and culture by engaged with lived experiences. Explain how various people communicate and create culture outside your own cultural identity. Writing a narrative that is based off of “data” that was collected. Knowledge: This assignment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in this discipline: cultural identity positionality intersectionality cultural spaces body politics ascribed/avowed identity Task For this assignment I am looking for a 2-3 page write up of your experience in an environment you are unfamiliar with (i.e. Catholic church, an LGBTQ+ bar, a comicbook store). As soon as you leave the place, write down what you observed (think “thick description” here: give as much details as possible so that you can remember as much as possible for when you write your reflection). When you write your reflection be as detailed as possible so that I can picture myself being in this space as well. Think of your role here as an ethnographer – experiencing another culture from an outsider’s perspective. Some things that you can pay attention to: How did people interact with each other? How did they interact with you, if at all? How did you feel in this place? Do you have any questions you would ask if you could ask anyone? For me it can be “A comicbook store”.
