Hello Krystal,
I agree with your points on the impact scoliosis can have on overall health. The reduced lung capacity and potential cardiac complications you mentioned highlight how a spinal condition can affect more than just posture. It’s interesting that you brought up body awareness as well. Individuals with scoliosis might not only face physical challenges but also psychological ones related to how they perceive their body. Promoting good posture and regular physical activity, as you mentioned, is crucial for maintaining musculoskeletal health and helping those with scoliosis manage their condition. Do you think early intervention and body awareness programs could help prevent some of these complications?

Krystal, thank you for your contribution to this weeks discussion. How does scoliosis progress over time, and what factors influence whether the curve will worsen? What role do growth spurts during adolescence play in the progression of scoliosis?

Workplace culture plays a vital role in shaping people’s behavior, role, and performance in the institution. The primary areas of safety culture in a healthcare setting include communication about an error, communication openness, response to error, organizational learning, overall rating on patient safety, staffing, teamwork, supervisor and management support, and work pressure and pace (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2024). As an advanced practice nurse, I have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to ensure that the culture areas are effective. One way I can achieve this is by using my knowledge to develop plans guiding responses in terms of an error and adopting it as one of the organization’s policies. The plan should include information on communicating the error to the relevant stakeholders. Making the plan a part of the policy will shape other care providers’ actions, making it a part of the values exhibited by the group when addressing such a challenge.
I would also create a collaborative environment using my communication skills to ensure that all care providers are open to each other and support each other in improving their knowledge and skills. The practice is vital in facilitating teamwork and organizational learning and improving supervision in all activities. In so doing, the practice will instill a culture of supporting each other, which will reduce work pressure and potential errors in healthcare institutions. Thus, my abilities and skills as an advanced practice nurse can be pivotal in driving organizational change, resulting in successfully creating a workplace culture of safety in all key areas.

Creating a safety mindset in healthcare is important for making sure that patients get good care and that mistakes are kept to a minimum. Some of the most important parts of patient safety culture that the AHRQ Surveys on Patient Safety look at are teamwork, leadership, staffing, communication, how to deal with mistakes without fear of blame, and how to learn from feedback (What Is Patient Safety Culture? | Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2024). As an advanced practice nurse at work, I would have to think about many of the key points that the poll talks about when I think about how I can support a safety culture. More good attitudes about patient safety are linked to fewer adverse events happening in hospitals, according to research (Mardon et al., 2010). As an APN, I would push for better communication by holding regular briefings and pushing people to report problems. By holding huddles every day or every week to talk about safety problems, news, and plans. The goal is to make sure that everyone on the team feels safe enough to share risks and close calls. Another important thing I would do is look at is the staffing need in the work area. I know from experience how disheartening it is to work in a place where there aren’t enough people, and how that can spread bad vibes throughout the workplace. As an APN, it’s our job to push for regular hiring reviews and changes that are made based on patient needs and safety concerns. Because burnout and stress can make people less safe, we should also support
